Broadway performer Stephanie Rothenberg will play Maria in the 2015 production, the Star has learned.
How do you solve a problem like Maria? Well, if you’re director Donna Feore, you do a little cross-border shopping.
The Star has learned that, after an exhaustive search up here failed to give Feore the right leading lady for the production of The Sound of Music she’s directing for theStratford Festival next summer, she conducted auditions in New York and finally gave the plum role to Stephanie Rothenberg.
Rothenberg’s major credit to date was appearing on Broadway in 2012 as the romantic lead, Rosemary, opposite Nick Jonas in the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
In the last Stratford production of the beloved Rodgers & Hammerstein musical in 2001, the role of Maria was played by Cynthia Dale.
Other major casting includes renowned Canadian mezzo-soprano Anita Krause as the Mother Abbess, company member Shane Carty as Max Detweiler and Robin Evan Willis, recently from the North American tour of The Wizard of Oz where she played Glinda, as Baroness Elsa von Schraeder.
Company member Ben Carlson has previously been announced as Captain Von Trapp.
The Sound of Music will officially open in May, 2015 at the Festival Theatre.
